LoFi

Since we last featured them (for the lightbrix), experimental light/sound design collective hehe have been very busy, with installations such as bruitRose (where street noise is converted into images), and artifi-ciel, (where remote sun and rain sensors generate artificial online weather), among others.

Our favorite, though, is LoFi, which turns the facade of a building into a graphic equalizer, publicly displaying the frequencies of the live music playing inside.

Leaves you wondering if the better show is on the inside or the outside of the building...

Table Top Fireplace

For those of us without a fireplace, this table top oil burning lamp will give us the warmth we need on those winter nights. With its stainless steel logs, and slate base, this lamp is sleek, contemporary, and, best of all, portable.

Double Bubble

Designer: Eero Aarnio

The latest design from Eero Aarnio, perhaps the most celebrated Finnish designer of the twentieth century. You probably know him best for the Bubble chair, but he produced some other very memorable pieces, including the Ball, Pastilli, Pony and Tomato chairs

The Double Bubble series includes two table lamps and one sculptural standing lamp. Initially created from blown glass, the lamps were ultimately cast in plastic to ensure durability and uniform light emission.

The Europeans are definitely into organic plastic extruded shapes these days. Maybe they're on to something.

The newest addition to the ever popular Mathmos London line of lights, the Airswitch 1 will be unveiled for the first time in North America at next week's Gift Fair in NY. It won't be available for sale in the US until March, and gnr8 will be among the first to stock it. Let us know if you want us to inform you when it arrives.

Chris Levine

Designer: Chris Levine

Best known to gnr8 as the designer who created the laserpod (and who, contrary to popular mythology, has had nothing to do with designing the lava lamp), Chris Levine is also a gifted artist doing some amazing things with light.

Definitely check out some of his latest work. For our money, anyone whose 2004 portfolio includes the first ever holographic portrait of Queen Elizabeth, AND the light show for massive attack must be doing something right.

HIATUS OVER

As some of you may have noticed, we haven't posted anything since mid-November. We apologize to our legions of loyal readers, but Xmas was a hugely busy time for us, and we're just now beginning to recover.

We thank our readers/customers for looking to us for lighting inspiration, and we look forward to bringing lots of cool new products to gnr8 in the new year.

We will also get back to posting on a (semi at least) regular basis.
